About Chandlery

A chandlery was originally the office in a wealthy medieval household responsible for wax and candles, as well as the room where the candles were kept. It could be headed by a chandler and was subordinated to the kitchen, existing only in larger households. While this function is obsolete today, the term now refers to a candle business, and "chandler" refers to someone who sells candles.

By the 18th century, most chandlers dealt in candles, oils, soap, and paint. These shops provided ships' stores, leading the term "chandlery" to refer to a store selling nautical items. In the U.S., this became known as a ship-chandlery or chandler’s shop. Today, the job of a chandler still exists in the chandlery business, and the term chandelier, once used for candle holders, now refers to ceiling light fixtures based on electrical lighting.
